LMS/BR ‘Crab’






LMS/BR Crab 5P5F 2-6-0.
This class of locomotive were one of the first designs of the LMS introduced in 1926.
A Hughes design built under direction of Fowler.
George Hughes was the last CME of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and Henry Fowler CME of the Midland Railway.
The locomotives, therefore, incorporated characteristics of both railways the most noticeable of which is the L&Y designed raised running plate over the cylinders which lead to their nickname 'crabs'.
The most Noticeable Midland feature was the narrow tender.
Used as general purpose locomotives they could be found on both passenger and freight workings all over the LMS system from Perth to London and Leeds to Stranraer.
Originally numbered 13000- 13244 they were renumbered 2700-2944 in 1934.

Last locomotive withdrawn in 1967.

3 have been preserved.


The ‘Crab’ sounds have been recorded from the prototype.
